The history of the Hotel Austria

The Hotel AUSTRIA is located in one of Vienna's oldest neighbourhoods, close to the former Roman military camp Vindobona, in the quiet Wolfengasse. From 1457, this site was home to a student hostel, later the famous ‘Zum weißen Wolf’ inn. After its demolition in 1848, the ‘Weißer Wolf’ hotel was built here. In 1944, an air raid bomb exploded in the hotel, killing several people and destroying the building. Reconstruction began in 1953 and the hotel was opened on 28 February 1955 under the name ‘AUSTRIA’.
