Rock Me Amadeus - Das Falco-Musical

World premiere on 7 October 2023: The eventful life of pop superstar Falco comes to the musical stage at the Ronacher. ‘Rock Me Amadeus - The Falco Musical’ is a tribute to the exceptional Austrian artist, with his greatest hits and four new songs.
Big musical news from Vienna: the new Falco musical will be on the programme at the Ronacher from autumn. The latest in-house production by Vereinigte Bühnen Wien tells the exciting story of the young Viennese musician Hans Hölzel and his rise to world star ‘Falco’. Rock Me Amadeus - The Falco Musical is a tribute to the exceptional Austrian artist and honours Falco as an artist and a person. In addition to Falco's greatest hits, the audience can expect an exciting journey through emotions, successes and escapades. The show provides insights into his innermost self, full of recurring inner turmoil.
The show captivates with an impressive stage show, rousing choreography, dazzling costumes and an elaborate stage design. Falco's unforgettable music naturally takes centre stage: in addition to his greatest hits, four brand new songs can also be heard that were composed exclusively for the show by the original Falco composers Ferdi Bolland and Rob Bolland. Incidentally, the two were also creative consultants for the musical production, as was Markus Spiegel - legendary music producer, Falco discoverer, friend and long-time confidant of Falco. With over 60 million records sold, numerous number 1 hits and songs in the charts of 27 countries, Falco is still considered one of the most successful pop stars in Europe today. His pop-rap hit Rock Me Amadeus from 1985 was the first and so far only German-language song to reach the top of both the US Billboard Hot 100 and the British singles charts.
Text passages from it read like a characterisation of his fictional character Falco:
He was a superstar
He was popular
He was so exalted
Because he had flair ...

Max Oppenheimer

Max Oppenheimer was an Expressionist of the first hour. Born in Vienna in 1885, he studied first at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and later at the Academy of Arts in Prague. He took part in the legendary exhibitions Kunstschau Wien 1908 and Internationale Kunstschau Wien 1909, where he made the acquaintance of numerous progressive artists of the time, such as Oskar Kokoschka, Egon Schiele and Albert Paris Gütersloh.
Egon Schiele, who was five years younger, actively sought contact with Oppenheimer in 1909. Their friendly relationship lasted for years and manifested itself, for example, in the joint work in Schiele's studio (winter 1910/11) or in the mutual appreciation of their artistic works. An initial friendship with Kokoschka developed into outright enmity due to rivalries between the two protagonists of the Austrian avant-garde. The invasion of Austria by German troops in 1938 forced the artist to flee and he emigrated via Switzerland to the USA, where he died in 1954.
With this long overdue, large-scale show, the Leopold Museum intends to shed new light on Max Oppenheimer's unjustly largely forgotten and equally important and groundbreaking oeuvre and to open up its comprehensive treasure trove of motifs. In addition, the role of the artist and his networks will be explored on the basis of his contemporaries Oskar Kokoschka and Egon Schiele
