Vienna’s Easter Markets

Ostermarkt in Wien mit großem bunten Osterei

Traditional Easter decorations and artfully decorated eggs, culinary treats, and a program of music await you at Vienna's Easter markets from mid of March. There’s all sorts of entertainment for young visitors to the markets.

Vienna enchants not only at Christmas with its wonderful Christmas markets, but also at Easter, when the city invites young and old to its charming Easter markets. The following overview contains a selection of Vienna's best Easter markets for you to visit, which can sweeten the time for you and your children in the lead up to Easter. The Easter market in front of Schönbrunn Palace is considered to be one of the most romantic Easter markets. Against the baroque backdrop of the castle, 75 exhibitors offer all kinds of culinary delights as well as decorative Easter decorations and handicrafts. Children will have fun at the hands-on rally, with a variety of games in the playhouse, a bicycle-powered carousel and in the Schloss Schönbrunn Children's Museum, while grown-ups are entertained at "Jazz am Ostermarkt". Every year, at the Old Viennese Easter market on Freyung, a pretty old square in the Old City, the biggest tower of eggs in Europe is built with around 40,000 painted Easter eggs. There are also numerous Easter specialties ranging from the Osterpinze Easter bread to the roast Easter lamb, handicrafts, floristry and for the very little ones a creative Easter workshop and a Kasperl stage (similar to Punch & Judy). The musical entertainment at the Old Viennese Easter Market starts daily at 4.30 pm. The Am Hof Easter Market is also fully dedicated to Easter customs with skilfully decorated eggs and flower arrangements, and also offers pretty handicrafts as well as hearty food. Not only can you look forward to the various wares offered by the booth holders at this Easter market, but also enjoy the flair of Vienna city center in good weather.

Fischer von Erlach

Karlskirche Wien

The Karlskirche is regarded as the most important baroque structure in Austria and is a Viennese landmark. Its architect, Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach (1656–1723), is the focus of the first special exhibition in the reopened Wien Museum.

Almost 70 years after the last major exhibition of Fischer’s work, and with the help of Werner Feiersinger’s exhibition design, his extraordinary buildings and projects are reassessed and placed in a contemporary artistic context. Fischer’s architectural oeuvre ranges from summer and city residences for the Viennese nobility, to church buildings for the Archbishop of Salzburg and the major imperial monuments of baroque Vienna. By eloquently referring to antiquity while being unmistakably modern, his buildings complied with the notion of noble representation, with its roots in tradition and history.
