Vienna State Opera

The magnificent building on the Ringstrasse was opened in 1869 and designed by the architects Sicardsburg and van der Nüll. Top international performers, directors and stage designers present their skills to the discerning Viennese audience. Important musicians such as Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss and Herbert von Karajan characterised the management of the opera house. The State Opera's repertoire ranges from Bizet's Carmen to Verdi's Nabucco and Mozart's Così fan tutte.

A highlight is the annual Vienna Opera Ball, during which the State Opera is transformed into an elegant ballroom for one night. Guided tours provide exciting insights behind the scenes and the State Opera Museum tells the story of this unique theatre.
